Dogs try to find Paradise
Our friends from the Sacramento Dog Owners Group alerted us to a piece in today's Sacramento Bee about their efforts in being able to use a portion of the American River for a place for their pooches to exercise, swim, and simply to enjoy the great outdoors unfettered by a leash. Even though Sacramento does have a few fenced in dog parks, they are mostly small neighborhood parks that certainly don't provide the amenities (i.e. a body of water to swim in) as the American River does. But the battle rages on, arguments are similar to what many Bark readers have encountered in other parts of the country and one that we are personally well familiar with when we worked on Cesar Chavez Park in Berkeley. The 17 acre park (within a larger 95 acre park) which is situated on a peninsula in surrounded on three sides by the SF Bay, still doesn't allow dogs in its waters! We would love to hear your thoughts, read the Bee piece, making sure to read through some of the comments as well.

We have a dog and we love taking her to the river. The big issue here that a lot of people are complaining about is that we take our dogs to the local parks along the river and that the owners are disobeying the law by not having the dogs on a leash. Dog owners and non owners alike are complaining that we're breaking the law and are afraid that we can't control our dogs and causing others to possibly get hurt, not picking up after their dogs/themselves, etc. the list goes on. I've been to a few local dog parks, they either have no water or a retention pond that I refuse to let my dog in as the water is beyond nasty.
All that our water loving dogs and their owners want is a designated dog park along the river that of course our dogs could use. If we could get a group together here in Sac to petion the county to do this for us, I'll jump on that bandwagon in a heartbeat.

Hmm, what's the issue, that there are no doggy life guards on hand? That the dogs will pollute the water? I was just at our local stream (sans our own dog who hates swimming) and the park ranger kicked the dogs out of the water, theoretically for their own good because a year ago there was a chemical spill up river that caused a fish kill.
I think the dogs are willing to risk it frankly, even we could only ask them...
